NETS for Students (Official Student Standards HERE)
Creativity & Innovation - Students will learn to use creativity to develop knowledge of the class material. The use of innovative technology will reinforce class content.
Communication & Collaboration - Students will use technology to help discuss class material. Collaboration takes place when students discuss and debate topics presented in and out of the classroom.
Research Information & Fluency - Students will use technology to aid in class research. By using technology, students are not limited to a certain time or place for gaining and processing classroom data.
Digital Citizenship - Students will learn to use technology in an appropriate manner. By being efficient with technological use, students can complete class objectives in a responsible manner.
Technology Operations & Concepts - By demonstrating the ability to handle basic technological operations, a student may continue to use technology as an educational tool. Students will be confident when using technology to enhance one’s critical thinking.
In my own education, I have seen these standards implemented through each course. Several classes rely on discussions that take place online. For most classes, the use of a computer and online access is necessary for writing and conducting research. In one class, more than half of my groups class project was assembled together online. For example, while I was in Maine, I was able to communicate with my group members on what work needed to be done before we presented our project to the class.
NETS for Teachers (Official Teacher Standards HERE)
Facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity - The teacher will use technology to teach students. By using technology, the students will be encouraged to think both critically, as well as creatively.
Design and develop digital age learning experiences and assessments - The teacher will develop material using technology appropriate for developing student growth. Technology will help analyze student knowledge of course material. Material can be structured differently for students at different educational levels.
Model digital age work and learning - It is the responsibility of the teacher to understand all of the technology that is being used to teach the students. By having a sufficient knowledge of the technology used, students can be taught course material in an efficient manner.
Promote and model digital citizenship and responsibility - It is the responsibility of the teacher to be an example of how technology is used correctly. The teacher will encourage the appropriate use of technology by informing students of topics such as copyright laws and source documentation.
Engage in professional growth and leadership - It is the job of the teacher to continually grow as a person and as an educator. By being involved with other faculty members, a teacher can continue to develop. Seeking professionalism and class leadership will encourage a teacher’s educational growth.
Application
As a teacher I plan to use technology as a tool to enhance student education. Technology can help with certain topics that people find boring. Technology can also be used to help students spend study time more effectively. By teaching students certain standards when using technology, my students will be more prepared for education outside of high school and junior high. Students will be equipped to research, collaborate, and analyze class material more confidently.
